 Christian Blind Mission (CBM ) together with Mildmay Institute of Health Sciences launched a project on Comprehensive and Inclusive Disability Prevention.

Community Capacity Building work

Overview of our Community Capacity Building Work

Multilevel Capacity Building for Comprehensive Child Disability Prevention. The project aims to;

  1. Scale-up innovative interventions for sustainable access and utilization of safe motherhood, child disability detection, and rehabilitation services in 4 districts of central Uganda.
  2. Establish community-based rehabilitation services in the implementation districts.
  3. Empower families of children with disabilities to address social and economic barriers to appropriate maternal and child health services.

Where we work

Over 60 health facilities in 4 districts (Mityana, Mubende, Kassanda, and Luwero)

Our Impact

Strengthened Community Systems for the delivery of Sustainable Comprehensive Child Disability Prevention services to children with birth defects and/or disability and their households.

Through a network of over 112 Village Health teams and 63 midwives and nurses, there has been a considerable improvement in the referral of disabilities to the facility with most identified cases being cerebral palsy, club foot, hydrocephalus, and the Deaf / Dump among others.

The project prides itself on supporting Health facilities in the referral process of CWD by availing information on referral centers, and training midwives, nurses, Community Resource Persons, and VHTs to refer identified cases to rehabilitation centers. This has increased cases from the community to the facility and therefore cases referred for further management.

One of the core strategies to support families with Children With Disabilities (CWD) is economic empowerment. Families have been trained, mentored, and guided to start businesses in their communities; soap making, tailoring, making of envelopes, etc… Across the four districts, 13 health facilities have kick-started Voluntary Saving Schemes, generating resources to invest in their businesses.
