About us
Welcome to Mildmay Institute of Health Sciences (MIHS).
Mildmay Institute of Health Sciences (MIHS) is the education arm of Mildmay Uganda, a national NGO specialising in Education, Health Care, Research, and Health Systems Strengthening. Its story is part of the wider Mildmay legacy, which began in the 1860s when Reverend William and Catherine Pennefather established a ministry of compassionate care for the sick and vulnerable in East London. This mission grew into the internationally recognised Mildmay movement, bringing together healthcare, education, research and Christian service.
In response to Uganda's growing HIV epidemic, Mildmay established operations in the country in 1998, following an invitation by the Government of Uganda to support HIV care and treatment. As the organisation expanded, so did its commitment to developing a skilled health workforce. This commitment led to the establishment of Mildmay Institute of Health Sciences in 2017 as the dedicated education arm of Mildmay Uganda.
Today, MIHS is a Christian institution of higher learning offering certificate, diploma, and degree programmes. Accredited by the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) and registered with the Uganda Technical Vocational Education and Training Council (TVET), the Institute is recognised for its commitment to academic excellence, competence-based training, research, innovation, and compassionate service.
Building on more than 150 years of the global Mildmay heritage and over two decades of impact in Uganda, MIHS is now advancing towards university status, preparing the next generation of health professionals to transform lives and strengthen health systems in Uganda and beyond.
